ABOUT THE EPISODE:
When Domestic Abuse Turns Financial: The Family Court Response is a special series on the Crystal Fedeli Podcast examining the intersection of domestic abuse, financial control, and the family court system.
Hosted by Crystal Fedeli, social researcher and policy analyst, consultant, speaker, and award-winning nonprofit founder, this series explores a pattern reflected both in research and in practice every single day: when women attempt to set boundaries, separate, or otherwise stop the abuse they are experiencing, the abuse often does not simply stop. Instead, it shifts forms, most commonly into financial control.
Many women then enter the family court system with limited or controlled access to financial resources, limited ability to secure legal representation, and unequal procedural support, while the opposing party often retains greater access to financial and legal resources. This series examines how those imbalances can create cascading consequences affecting long-term financial stability, custody and co-parenting, health, litigation outcomes, and overall well-being.
At the same time, this series explores the broader systems response to coercive control and financial abuse, including the gap between evidence-based practice, existing matrimonial law, and how these situations are often handled in practice.
Through conversations with individuals with lived experience, researchers, attorneys, advocates, policymakers, and other professionals, this series explores not only these patterns themselves, but also the practical skill sets, strategies, and systems-level conversations necessary to support women navigating these situations more effectively.
